1. What led you to owning your own business?
It happened unexpectedly. I worked in small intern-like positions in New York right after college. These positions truly helped me experience the real side of the fashion industry. A side I really didn't like. Shortly after, I gave up on finding a fashion dream job and moved back home to Maryland. After trying different things, I went back to sketching and decided to see if anyone would buy my designs online. The rest is history!
2. What is your business philosophy?
Handmade fashion that actually fits. The Zophia philosophy has always been based on slow fashion and the appreciation of craftsmanship. We value relationships that are built through collaboration and intentional design.
3. What have you learned about yourself by owning
your own business?
Owning your own business makes you vulnerable, at least in my opinion. I feel that every part of my business is an extension of my vision. It becomes very personal and when something goes wrong, it's difficult to not be affected by it.
4. What has been the most surprising thing for you?
I'm just surprised that I can play a small part in women's lives. I never imagined I'd be doing something like this. When I see my clients wearing their pieces over and over again, I really am touched.
5. What advice would you give to a woman starting a new business endeavor?
Follow your gut. If you really want something to become a reality, jump! You'll never stop learning. Embrace your network and be kind to those who are willing to help you along the way.
